With an area of up to 1000 acres (about 400 hectares), Stanley Park is the largest urban park in North America. Originally, the park was a base of the Royal Navy, then the British government gave the land to the city of Vancouver in 1888. The park's Stanley name is named after Earl Stanley of Preston. – who pledged to protect this place from the very first day it opened.
